Hi students,
Today, we watched two YouTube videos in class about the Gilded Age and the short-lived Populist movement that came right after it. We discussed how it was important to study the time period that a story was written in to truly understand the underlying ideas and themes of a literary work. We all know that L. Frank Baum was a populist, and many leading literary scholars believe that The Wizard of Oz was a political allegory (a story with a very significant meaning). Therefore, we watched John Greene's crash course on the Gilded Age. Please focus on the second half of the video, which explains the origins and rise of populism. Then, we watched Mr. Beat's informative video on the populist movement itself. I have linked both videos below. Feel free to re-watch them. There were several of you absent today due to an early vacation departure or because you were helping out in ASB. Please be sure to watch both videos during your holiday break. Finally, when we get back from break, we will be writing notes and creating timelines in our Oz Journals. I will be discussing some important historical events in more detail. See you back in school on the 4th of January, 2016! John Greene's Crash Course - The Gilded Age The Populist Movement - Mr. Beat's Social Studies Channel |
